LYRICS to PUTIN TOLD THE RUSSIAN NATION
By The Freedom Toast
Based on Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation by Tom Paxton
In Russia, ‘twas the same old story
Bound for anywhere but glory
Putin said, “Crimea’s not enough.
“I thought it was, but it is not.”
“I can’t yet have Navalny shot.”
“But I am tired of this same old stuff.”
Fearless Leader V. V. Putin
Told the Russians, “start the shootin’
“There is fertile land for us to gain
“It may cost us ten thousand dead
”But still, there’s plenty to be said
”For driving the Ukrainians from Ukraine.”
Now, Fearless Leader told his nation,
“This ain’t war, nor an invasion.”
“I’m just keeping Russian people free.”
“If that means turning most Ukrainians . . .
“Into Poles, Czechs and Romanians”
“Why should that mean anything to me?”
Fearless Leader V. V. Putin
Told the Russians, “start the shootin’
“There is fertile land for us to gain
“It may cost us ten thousand dead
”But still, there’s plenty to be said
”For driving the Ukrainians from Ukraine.”
He told the pride of his great nation,
“Have no fear of radiation.”
“Chernobyl’s where your tanks can park!”
“And later, if they hear you’ve died . . .
“Your folks can always point with pride.”
“’Cause you’re the gravestone glowing in the dark!”
Fearless Leader V. V. Putin
Told the Russians, “start the shootin’
“There is fertile land for us to gain
“It may cost us ten thousand dead
”But still, there’s plenty to be said
”For driving the Ukrainians from Ukraine.”
Now, Vlad is looking for a loophole
Rationalizing Mariupol
Bombing buildings full of kids looks bad.
To make up for it, he’ll play Gramps
To kids in concentration camps
He’ll set up just for them in Volgograd.
Fearless Leader V. V. Putin
Told the Russians, “start the shootin’
“There is fertile land for us to gain
“It may cost us ten thousand dead
”But still, there’s plenty to be said
”For driving the Ukrainians from Ukraine.”
Vla-DI-mir thinks he’s very clever
But this can’t go on forever
Things just are not going as he planned
Spetznaz troops and all the others
Stopped by groups of great grandmothers
Standing proudly to defend their land
Fearless Leader V. V. Putin
Told the Russians, “start the shootin’
“There is fertile land for us to gain
“It may cost us ten thousand dead
”But still, there’s plenty to be said
”For driving the Ukrainians from Ukraine.”
