LYRICS to THE COUNTRY’S HEART
(Music by Shakira and Lester Mendez

How many times does this have to happen?
Yet they deny it,
so deliberate, so determined.
“Guns can do no wrong.”
“Killers will find a way,” they say.
“So laws have no effect.” And on and on.

Tell me now, tell me now.
Would their words be the same
were the dead their own?

They don’t even know the meaning of the words ‘I’m sorry.’
They continue to profit from a lie
they have not the courage to defy.
How many times do we have to hear the words ‘I’m sorry?’
I’m starting to believe it should be illegal to deceive
the country’s heart.

What would it take to spur them to action?
How urgent the plea
before they agree.
Yet people have cried out,
been calling out for days and hours.
Just empty platitudes and on and on.

Anyhow, anyhow
Excuses are the past.
This time must be the last.

How many times do we have to hear the words ‘I’m sorry?’
We don’t need more thoughts and prayers.
We must avoid the future tears.
The time has come to put an end to this tragic story.
We all have much to grieve, as they continue to deceive
the country’s heart.

Your voice and lyrics should be the sound we hear up front, the music, though wonderful over rides your magnificent voice and the powerful lyrics.

Thank you brother. I knew one more shooting of children or youth would deeply grieve you. Thank you for giving voice to the horror. Thank you for calling out our legislators for their inaction.

I believe that in this country, my own, the USA, we still believe in human sacrifice. We still practice human sacrifice. We sacrifice our children to the gods of guns and war, greed and power.

This song made me cry. It is so sad what is happening and please explaine to me why? I am from Belgium. Tell me why children, teens, young adults and all the other innocent victims are sacrified to defend a law that enables the perpetrator to buy the guns he kills them with??
How hypocryt is anyone that is pro weapon when they say they grieve? How disgusting is a president that goes to play golf while parents are burying their children, victims of yet another massacre. Everyone with only a little bit of common sense would make it impossible that the average citizen is allowed to wear guns. I am not an American, I do not understand this, please tell me why so many americans want a law that gives killers their tools….
