I REALLY HAD TO CUT YOU OFF – Parody of Somebody That I Used to Know

Since November, 2016, I’ve heard many many stories about people who have cut off relationships because of the outcome of the election. In fact, everyone I know personally has either done it themselves, had it done to them, or know someone who has. This parody is nothing more or less than an acknowledgement of that reality.

THE SOURCE MATERIAL – “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Wally de Backer (GOTYE)
“Stormy” is a hit song by the Classics IV which was released on their LP “Mamas and Papas/Soul Train” in 1968. It entered Billboard Magazine October 26, 1968 peaked at #5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and #26 Easy Listening. The final line of the Chorus has the singer pleading to the girl: “Bring back that sunshiny day”. This single release along with the prior release of “Spooky”, and soon afterward the release of “Traces”, made great success for the band, a part of the well known songs from the ensemble.

I REALLY HAD TO CUT YOU OFF
Lyrics by Don Caron – Music by Wally de Backer (GOTYE)
Before election time we used to do things together,
and politics was not a subject to avoid.
It seemed so easy to get along.
We could talk about it all night long.
But that’s all gone and now you’re just a dying ember.

November brought about a certain type of madness.
I couldn’t stomach the choices that you made.
So when we found that we could not make sense,
we thought maybe could still be friends,
but I’ll admit that I was glad when it was over.

I really had to cut you off.
Couldn’t stand to listen to it for another second.
Your thinking came as quite a blow.
You’re living in a place where I could never go.

I don’t know why you stooped so low,
closed your eyes and just continued to deny the problem,
and it seems like years ago.
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

I’m just thinking of the ways he’s screwed us over,
and you still believing that he cares at all about you.
You seem to trust him. Is that really wise?
The guy who told more than 2000 lies?
I can see you still believe him though,
and you spend a lot of effort to avoid what you don’t want to know.

I really had to cut you off.
Couldn’t stand to listen to it for another second.
Your thinking came as quite a blow.
You’re living in a place where I could never go.

I don’t know why you stooped so low,
closed your eyes and just continued to deny the problem,
and it seems like years ago.
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know
Somebody that used to know (repeat)
