Lyrics by Greg Gower – Music: What I Like About You by The Romantics

It’s not about you
when they take a knee
Am I black? Hmmm…no
guess its not about me…no!

Kaepernick kneeling parody projectWho does this guy think he is?
Oughta be glad he has a place to live
but its true
it’s not about you.

Well you claim
that you’re a patriot.
Sure you love your country
just not the folks inside of it…yeah.

‘Cause someone’s whispering in your ear
making you cry patriotic tears
but its true
it’s still not about you.

It’s not about you or your heritage.
When a fellow human
takes to his knee
try to listen you never know
maybe we will all agree…yeah.

It’s not about Mom,

God or apple pie.
It’s just a football game,
nobody’s gonna die.
So don’t get upset
but I’ve got a hunch
your panties are already wadded
and in a bunch.
But it’s true, it’s not about you!

Someone’s whispering in your ear
making you cry patriotic tears
but it’s true
it’s never been about you!

It’s never been about you.
Just get off that horse.
Try listening to what is said
and consider the source
‘cause it’s not about you
It’s never been about you!

“What I Like About You” was jointly written by three members of the group “The Romantics:” Lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and harmonicist Wally Palmar, lead guitarist and vocalist Mike Skill, and drummer/lead vocalist Jimmy Marinos. The song was built around a guitar part crafted by Mike Skill.
The song’s refrain, “Hey, uh-huh-huh” was influenced by The Yardbirds’ “Over Under Sideways Down” and by Chuck Berry’s “Back in the U.S.A.” The song’s riff is reminiscent of Neil Diamond’s earlier hit, “Cherry Cherry.” The Romantics recorded ‘What I Like About You” at Coconuts Recording Studio in Miami Beach, Florida.
When they first released, “What I Like About You” it was very popular with their fans, especially in their live concerts, but in terms of record sales and radio airplay, the song was only moderately successful. It peaked out at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song did very well in Australia however, where it reached number two on the Australian Singles Chart. It was only towards the end of the 1980s, after the song was used in a commercial for Budweiser beer, that “What I Like About You” grew to become one of the most popular rock anthems of all time.
