I REALLY HAD TO CUT YOU OFF – A Parody | Don Caron

Since the election way back in November, 2016, I’ve heard many many stories about people who have cut off relationships because of the outcome of that electiion . . . on both sides of the aisle. In regard to cutting people off, everyone I know personally has either done it themselves, had it done to them, or know someone who has due to the current political climate. This parody of a song by Wally de Backer is an acknowledgement of that reality.

and politics was not a subject to avoid.
It seemed so easy to get along.
We could talk about it all night long.
But that’s all gone and now you’re just a dying ember.

November brought about a certain type of madness.
I couldn’t stomach the choices that you made.
So when we found that we could not make sense,
we thought maybe could still be friends,
but I’ll admit that I was glad when it was over.

I really had to cut you off.
Couldn’t stand to listen to it for another second.
Your thinking came as quite a blow.
You’re living in a place where I could never go.

I don’t know why you stooped so low,
closed your eyes and just continued to deny the problem,
and it seems like years ago.
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

I’m just thinking of the ways he’s screwed us over,
and you still believing that he cares at all about you.
You seem to trust him. Is that really wise?
The guy who told more than 2000 lies?
I can see you still believe him though,
and you spend a lot of effort to avoid what you don’t want to know.

HISTORY OF SOURCE MUSIC

“Somebody That I Used to Know” was written by Wally de Backer who goes by the name Gotye. The song was released in Australia and New Zealand in July of 2011 as the second single from Gotye’s third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). “Somebody That I Used To Know” was written and recorded by Gotye at his parents’ house on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and is lyrically related to the experiences he has had with relationships.

Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year for this work in 2011. The song came ninth in the Triple J Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years, 2013. In 2013, the song won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year.
