US President Donald Trump wants to build a triumphal arch across from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, the latest in his efforts to make over the capital city in his style. The so-called Arc de Trump would commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary next year and is reportedly being privately funded by Trump’s supporters. His other second-term developments include a gilded makeover for the White House, paving over the Rose Garden and constructing a $250m ballroom, as well as the clearing of homeless encampments throughout the capital. They’re building an arc in the nation’s square
A monument to golden hair
Marble pillars, high and stout
With his name carved in, no room for doubt
The pigeons laugh, the tourists stare
A hollow echo fills the air
The Arc of Trump
Oh what a sight
It blocks the sun
It steals the night
A shrine to ego
Tall and wide
No room for truth
Just pride inside
A thousand flags wave in the breeze
Each one whispers, “Me, Me, Me.”
Gold-plated steps, a velvet rope
A staircase climbing up to hope
But at the top it’s just a mirror
Reflecting dreams that disappear
The Arc of Trump
Oh what a sight
It blocks the sun
It steals the night
A shrine to ego
Tall and wide
No room for truth
Just pride inside
They tore down trees to make it stand
Concrete poured by trembling hands
No birds sing here, no flowers grow
Just shadows cast by the golden glow
And when the rain begins to fall
The gilded letters start to crawl
The cracks appear, the truth comes through
An arc built high, but built untrue
And folks will say, with a knowing grin
“History’s ark won’t let him in.”
